Dolphins make final Seau push
Agent doubts deal will happen
BY JASON COLE
Although Junior Seau's agent says a deal for the San Diego Chargers linebacker is unlikely today, NFL sources say the Dolphins will make a strong run at Junior Seau before today's 4 p.m. deadline.
Even if a deal isn't struck, a Dolphins source said Sunday night the team thinks it eventually will sign Seau.
''If it's going to happen, it's going to be the Dolphins,'' an NFL executive said. ``[Seau has] made it clear that's his top choice, and they want him. From everything I hear, they have a deal in place. But it's still going to cost the Chargers, and they keep saying they have to get rid of the money.''
The Dolphins have reached acceptable terms with Seau's agent, Marvin Demoff, on a multiyear deal, said an executive with another NFL team. But San Diego officials -- with whom the Dolphins have had extensive discussions, according to three NFL sources -- must be willing to make the deal.
This is a difficult time for the Chargers, whose general manager, John Butler, died Friday after battling lung cancer. Further complicating the deal is a $2.7 million payment that Seau is due to receive Tuesday from whatever team he is with at 4 p.m. today.
On Friday, Demoff said he doubted a deal would be done because no other team has been willing to pay the $2.7 million. That is, without significantly restructuring the contract.
Demoff continued to say Sunday that a deal is unlikely.
''There's nothing different from what [I said Friday],'' Demoff said.
Demoff's talk could be posturing in this poker-like game among Seau, the Chargers and the Dolphins.
Once the 4 p.m. deadline passes, the Chargers still can deal Seau, but they will have far less incentive to do it quickly. Not only was San Diego hoping to get another team to pay the $2.7 million, but trading Seau or cutting him before June 1 would cost the team another $1 million in salary-cap room because of cap rules.
If the Chargers wait to release him on or after June 1, they would defer $2.66 million in cap charges to the 2004 season.
However, Demoff said San Diego could change its mind about trading Seau if a deal is not done by today.
The Dolphins have offered a 2004 draft pick for Seau, and the level of the pick could be contingent on how Seau plays this season. The asking price by the Chargers had been a fourth-round pick in this year's draft, but the Dolphins don't have a fourth-round selection this month.
