The Redskins’ coaching staff was quietly concerned about the progress of then-rookie RB Ladell Betts early last season but started to trust the rookie as the season wore on. Now Betts has a good chance, in some observers’ eyes, to be the full-time starter even with Trung Canidate and Kenny Watson in the picture.

With new 49ers head coach Dennis Erickson possibly leaning toward more one-RB sets, there is an outside shot that RB Garrison Hearst becomes a surprise cap casualty.

Sources close to the Eagles say that despite RB Duce Staley’s good season last year, Staley might not be in the team’s plans past this year — especially if Brian Westbrook or Correll Buckhalter emerges ahead of him.

We hear it’s possible but not likely that the 49ers could trade WR Tai Streets, who has indicated he might be ready for a change of scenery. The Jets reportedly offered a third-round pick for Streets in mid-March, but the Niners insisted on at least a second-round pick.

Despite reports that the Cowboys are interested in free-agent RB Olandis Gary, sources say those reports are coming from Gary’s agent and not from anyone inside the Cowboys’ organization.

Saints coach Jim Haslett has invited former Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin to attend minicamp and spend about two weeks at their training camp to have Coughlin make some evaluations and pick his brain. Haslett got to know Coughlin from practices the Saints have had with the Jaguars. Jon Gruden has also talked to Coughlin but said he hasn't finalized anything.

The Raiders have some concerns over the health of their two starting offensive tackles, Lincoln Kennedy and Barry Sims. Kennedy, who suffered a concussion early last season, has been bothered by migraine headaches on and off since then. Sims can’t seem to completely shake the nagging foot problems that he’s played with for the better part of two years. The Raiders probably will be on the cautious side and limit them in the early stages of the preseason.

Look for the Buccaneers to get serious about re-signing TE Ricky Dudley in the next couple of weeks. Dudley became more important to the team when 24-year-old TE Casey Crawford decided to retire to take over duties as host of a hunting and fishing television show in Charlotte, N.C. The Bucs had seen Crawford as a possible starter somewhere down the line, but he decided he just didn’t want to play football anymore.

The way we hear it, there is some quiet concern in the Panthers’ organization about the recent signing of WR Kevin Dyson. Dyson underwent surgery in December to re-attach his right hamstring to the bone, and considering the problems the team has had with WR Muhsin Muhammad’s hamstrings over the years, there is some worry that the Panthers may just be picking up another hamstring headache.

Bengals PK Neil Rackers, a restricted free agent, will visit the Seahawks on the week of April 6, his agent, Robert Roche, told PFW. The Seahawks are looking for a kicker after declining to match the offer sheet the Bills gave to Rian Lindell. Were Rackers to be signed to an offer sheet the Bengals didn’t match, Cincinnati would get a sixth-round pick as compensation.

The Ravens are interested in Cardinals WR Frank Sanders, who would help take some of the pressure off WR Travis Taylor.

Don’t be surprised if the Ravens take a quarterback with their first-round pick (No. 10 overall). We hear the team likes Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller and Rex Grossman. A Ravens source says head coach Brian Billick thinks highly of Boller, whose draft stock is on the rise. Grossman would be a likely option for the Ravens if they were to trade down in the first round or wait until Round Two to pick a quarterback.

BuffaloBills.com reports the Buffalo Bills have agreed to terms with free agent FB Sam Gash (Ravens) to an undisclosed contract.

Bloomberg reports the contract G Heath Irwin signed with the Denver Broncos was a one-year deal worth $655,000.

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports free agent DE Vonnie Holliday (Packers) will decide between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Arizona Cardinals. Holliday has not heard back from the Seattle Seahawks and isn’t sure the Philadelphia Eagles will bid on him.

Updating a prior story, Buccaneers.com reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially re-signed free agent OT Roman Oben to a four-year deal. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Updating an earlier story, Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the deal WR/KR Michael Bates signed with the Carolina Panthers was a one-year contract worth $655,000. A workout bonus of $25,000 was also included. Bates will only count $475,000 against the 2003 cap.

Joe Linta has confirmed to KFFL the Green Bay Packers have traded a conditional seventh-round draft choice to the Washington Redskins for C David Brandt, who was out of football in 2002.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the contract RB Leon Johnson signed with the St. Louis Rams was a one-year deal worth $545,000, plus a $15,000 signing bonus.

Updating a previous story, Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said the team will not restructure the deal for QB Tommy Maddox. He will earn $650,000 in base salary and $75,000 extra through incentives.

armer trosty, operation von mcCaf
The Denver Broncos have announced WR Ed McCaffrey (groin) will undergo surgery to repair what is known as athletic pubalgia, or sports hernia...

Updating previous reports, the Bergen Record reports free agent RB Stacey Mack (Jaguars) is likely to sign with the New York Giants unless another team offers him a starting position.

The Denver Broncos have announced QB Steve Beuerlein has contacted head coach Mike Shanahan and told him he will indeed return to the team for the 2003 season.

Updating previous reports, the Star-Ledger reports the New York Jets will continue to look for a PK to compete with Doug Brien. Brien will get the first shot at winning the starting job, but he will not be without competition, according to Jets’ special teams coach Mike Westhoff.
