NEW YORK — The New York Jets are joining the ranks of those not planning to attend next month’s NFL Draft in Chicago, announcing today that they will skip the festivities.

“Usually the draft is here in New York, so it’s an easy trip for us,” said owner Woody Johnson. “But this year it’s in Chicago and, well … we’re also trying a new draft approach in which we don’t draft anyone at all. We never get anyone good anyway, so it’s always been a waste of our time.”

Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, the top two quarterbacks in the draft, have announced they will not be in attendance, making the Jets the third entity to opt out. Commissioner Roger Goodell said he’d like to see the trend end.

“Ideally we’d have Winston and Mariota there,” said the commissioner.

The Jets history of draft failures is well-known and it’s why Johnson has sought a change under the new regime of general manager Mike Maccagnan.

“Instead of drafting players, I think the better approach is to sign people who have been cut by other teams,” said Johnson. “At least we’d know then that they were at least good enough to be on an NFL roster at some point. We don’t have many players like that.”

Despite a similar draft history, the Cleveland Browns do still plan to attend the draft.

“Yep. We’ll be there in New York at Radio City. Same as always,” said team owner Jimmy Haslam.
