The NSFF 2013 regular season is complete and for many teams it came down the final game to see how things would look for their playoff chances. Of course the season wouldn't be complete without a bit of controversy . Here is how everything ended after the completion of the Week 13 games:
Division Champions:
1. Berlin Cowboys (10-3)
2. Stockerau Bulldogs (9-4)
3. Berlin Saber Rider (7-6)
4. Marburg Gamblers (6-7)
Peleton:
5. Wiener Schnitzels (9-4)
6. Berlin Basher (7-6)
7. Red Mambas Hannover (6-7) (2-0)
8. Gehrden Warriors (6-7) (0-2)
Draft Playoff:
9. Berlin TDnators (5-8) (2-1)
10. Marburg Crusaders (5-8) (1-1)
11. Steglitz Hawks (5-8) (1-2)
12. Senefelder Spatzen (3-10)
Explanation:
RED had a 2-0 head-to-head record and therefore won the tie-breaker over GWS for seed 7.
The tie between BTD, MRC and STH required some in-depth review of our current rules and brought to our attention that the rules, as worded currently, do not sufficiently explain the tie-breaking mode for a three-way tie when the teams do not have a directly comparable head-to-head record. After much investigation I decided that the best way to apply our tie-breakers would be to mirror what our engine does and apply the tie as follows:
The teams that have a similar record are compared based on head-to-head record, initiating the tie-break rules once again.
1. Direkter Vergleich Sieg/Niederlagen-Verhältnis (Direct Comparison of Winning Percentage)
2. Head to Head Record (Direkter Vergleich mit Punkteverhältnis)
3. Totale Punkte erzielt während der Saison
4. Totale Punkte gegen das eigene Team während der Saison
Looking at only the three head-to-head matchups (i.e. Direkter Vergleich Sieg/Niederlagen-Verhältnis), we determine the winning percentage and this then decided the order:
BTD had a 2-1 record and took seed 9
MRC had a 1-1 record and took seed 10
STH had a 1-2 record and took seed 11
We recognize there is too much room for multiple/ambiguous interpretations of the rule, therefore we will fix the wording as it currently stands. I urge anyone with differing opinions to use the Discussion thread, or to start a new thread specifically for this topic. It's a complicated discussion but Uwe (in German if needed) or I will gladly attempt to clarify the reasoning behind this decision.
Based on these standings the playoff matchups have been set as follows:
Championship Playoff Matchups:
P1: #1 BCB vs. #8 GWS
P2: #2 STB vs. #7 RED
P3: #3 BSR vs. #6 BEB
P4: #4 MGS vs. #5 WIE
Rookie Draft Playoff Matchups:
D1: #9 BTD vs. #10 MRC
D2: #11 STH vs. #12 SEN
The mode is the same as last year, after every round the winning teams are again matched up so that the top seed will play the bottom seed, etc.
Finally we can see an idea of what the order of the 2014 Veteran Draft will look like, based on the inverse standings. The exceptions are spot 11 and spot 12 which are reserved for the 1st and 2nd place teams, thus making this initial order an incomplete version.
1. Senefelder Spatzen (3-10)
2. Steglitz Hawks (5-8) (1-2)
3. Marburg Crusaders (5-8) (1-1)
4. Berlin TDnators (5-8) (2-1)
5. Gehrden Warriors (6-7) (0-2)
6. Red Mambas Hannover (6-7) (2-0)
7. Berlin Basher (7-6)
8. Wiener Schnitzels (9-4)
9. Marburg Gamblers (6-7)
10. Berlin Saber Rider (7-6)
11. Stockerau Bulldogs (9-4)
12. Berlin Cowboys (10-3)
Best of luck to everyone! Viel Glück!
