Updating previous reports, the Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers probably won’t use their first-round draft pick on a QB unless in the unlikely scenario they trade up to select USC QB Carson Palmer. “I think there’s five or six guys behind him [Palmer] that have credentials, but each one of them has an area of concern,” said Panthers offensive coordinator Dan Henning. “What’s best for the franchise now, in my opinion, would be to have Rodney [Peete] and to have some veteran competition that may be younger than Rodney, but of a similar ilk – accurate and experienced.”

Bill Williamson for the Pioneer Press reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice and owner Red McCombs said the team might consider trading down from their No. 7 spot in the first round to acquire more high draft picks. “We obviously would get a very good player at No. 7,” McCombs said. “I have also asked our guys about trading down, and maybe the draft is wide enough to get us a lower-first-round pick and pick up and extra second.”

Updating previous reports, Michael Marot of the AP, reports Marshall QB Byron Leftwich (leg) claims his left leg is fine. Leftwich said his left leg he has injured each of the last two seasons is fine and he is ready for the NFL. ''The stress fracture was in a different spot,'' he said. ''But you hurt your leg twice and people say you've got leg problems.''

Curt Sylvester reports for the Free Press Michigan State WR Charles Rogers would not mind playing for the Detroit Lions. He would be reunited with his former MSU coach, Bobby Williams. "I knew Bobby before Detroit," Rogers said Friday. "I knew him before I went to Michigan State. Bobby and I are going to have a lifetime friendship." He also likes QB Joey Harrington. He declined to say what his best 40-yard dash time was last football season, but he has a pretty lofty goal there, too. "My dream time is 4.19 (seconds)," he said laughing. "My dream time."

Len Pasquarelli for ESPN.com reports Miami (Fla.) WR Andre Johnson turned some heads at the NFL Combine Friday when he weighed in at 230 pounds with hardly any fat on him at all. His 6-2 frame and his enormous size have a lot of scouts comparing him to Arizona Cardinals WR David Boston.

Len Pasquarelli for ESPN.com reports USC RB Justin Fargas dramatically improved his stock at Friday’s NFL Combine. He was one of just nine RBs who chose to participate in the 40-yard dash, and the decision proved wise, as he recorded two sub-4.4 times. His first run was recorded from 4.28-4.33 seconds, while his second didn’t disappoint at 4.34-4.35 seconds. His performance might have established him as the premier RB prospect and could catapult him into the first round. “That kid made himself a lot of money today,” said one AFC personnel man. “He made everyone sit up in their seats.”

Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy said on Friday at the NFL Combine that any teams interested in Miami RB Willis McGahee (knee) will be looking long-term. Dungy said that logic tells him that McGahee will not be able to play in the upcoming season.

Marshall QB Byron Leftwich (leg) said he hadn’t spoken with the Cincinnati Bengals as of Friday afternoon.
Marshall QB Byron Leftwich (leg) isn’t working out at the NFL Combine because he’s still recovering from a fracture just above his ankle. “Leg’s going fine, I’m finally back to 100 percent,” Leftwich said Friday. He said the injury was a small fracture. He said it’s great to be at the Combine to show everyone he’s doing fine. “Don’t forget about me, I’m still here,” Leftwich said.

Updating earlier stories, Curt Sylvester of the Detroit Free Press, reports MSU WR Charles Rogers was asked what type of playing style should people expect from him. "I'm going to remind you of Charles Rogers," he said. "That's who I'm going to remind you of -- a combination of Randy Moss, Michael Irvin, TO (Terrell Owens)." The comparison shows confidence in his ability by comparing himself to three elite receivers.

Updating previous stories, Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports USC QB Carson Palmer doesn't mind the thought of being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals, who haven’t had the best luck choosing quarterbacks in recent drafts. "I look for the positives going into everything, and whether it be Cincinnati or wherever, I'm going to go in and think I'm going to be able to turn it around and win a lot of games," Palmer said.
