Vikings sign Bears' kicker Edinger to offer sheet
The restricted free agent market continued to generate increasing action on Saturday, with the Minnesota Vikings signing three-year veteran kicker Paul Edinger to an offer sheet, a deal that includes $1.6 million in upfront money.

Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the offer sheet agrred to by restricted free agent WR Laveranues Coles (Jets) with the Washington Redskins is for seven years and is worth $35 million. It includes a signing bonus of $13 million, which is the largest ever paid to a wide receiver in a first "rider," and a roster bonus of $2 million in July of 2006. The cap number for the 2003 season would be about $2.31 million. Coles will fly to Washington on Monday to sign the offer sheet, and it will then be submitted to the league office, barring any snags.

According to the Washington Post, the Washington Redskins would still pursue free agent WR Kevin Dyson (Titans) even if they were to sign free agent WR Laveranues Coles (Jets).

John Mullin reports for the Chicago Tribune the Chicago Bears were "shocked" Saturday when the Minnesota Vikings offered restricted free PK Paul Edinger agent a five-year contract worth $7 million. "The Bears had no idea anything like this was coming," one NFL executive said. The Bears are expected to match the offer by Friday's deadline.

Bengals.com reports the Cincinnati Bengals are expected not to match the Buffalo Bills offer to LB Takeo Spikes as soon as Monday. The team has spent $11 million of up-front money to three likely defensive starters in free agency and that money could have to used to re-sign Spikes.

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the Cincinnati Bengals have signed free agent CB Tory James (Raiders) to a four-year, $14.4 million deal that includes a $3.7 million signing bonus.

Updating previous reports, the Denver Post reports Denver Broncos TE Shannon Sharpe spoke out to clarify he is no closer to a decision to return in 2003 than he was when last season ended. Earlier reports said Sharpe had decided to return. "I don't know where this is coming from," Sharpe said. "You can talk to (Broncos coach) Mike Shanahan, you can talk to (Broncos owner) Pat Bowlen, you can talk to (Sharpe's agent) Marvin Demoff. But until you hear it come out of my mouth, nothing is etched in stone. I have committed to nothing. All I've committed to is that the next two months, I'm going to work out, see how I feel and then make my decision."

Bengals.com reports the Cincinnati Bengals have declined to match the offer sheet given to LB Takeo Spikes by the Buffalo Bills. "Takeo has been a good player for the Bengals and in the community, and I wish him good luck with his career in Buffalo," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. "Today is the beginning of a new day in the Bengal organization, and in the shaping of the football team under my direction."

Updating previous reports, Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com free agent WR Donald Hayes (Patriots) has actually agreed to a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Financial details were not immediately available. The one-year contract in Jacksonville should provide Hayes the opportunity to revive his career and then go back into free agency next spring.

Panthers.com reports the Carolina Panthers have released DT Sean Gilbert.

The Dallas Cowboys have signed free agent TE Dan Campbell (Giants) to a three-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

The Cincinnati Bengals have announced the official signing of free agent CB Tory James (Raiders) to a four-year deal. Official financial terms were undisclosed.

Teresa Varley reports for Steelers.com Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jerome Bettis (knee) is doing well with his recovery from knee surgery. "The surgery was successful," said Bettis. "They went in, got to the problem and cleared it up. Everything went really good." Bettis is at the team's facility five days a week. Bettis plans on being in Pittsburgh for just a few more weeks. He then will continue his normal program of working out with his personal trainer, Bob Kearse. Bettis added he was right on schedule with his rehab.
