The Dallas Cowboys, during a Thursday afternoon press conference, officially announced the release of RB Emmitt Smith.
Updating earlier reports, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he spoke with RB Emmitt Smith, who was just released by the team, and together they decided it was best to go in a different direction. They explored a wide variety of options, including one that would have had Smith return to Dallas this year. Jones said he knows Smith can still play but it was time the Cowboys went a different direction. “He will forever be a part of the Dallas Cowboys,” Jones said about Smith. According to Jones, Smith said he views himself as in a partnership with the team and believes that will last long beyond his playing days. He also added that Smith wanted to do what is best for the Cowboys now and for years to come.
Former Dallas Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith, who was released by the team on Thursday, said he’ll start weighing his options in regards to playing for other teams. He feels he can help another team make it to the Super Bowl and would like to be a part of it. “In my mind, I’m still a 1,300-yard back,” Smith said Thursday. He noted that he did not want to be a distraction for the Cowboys under new head coach Bill Parcells and will now focus on weighing all of his options – from both a business and family standpoint.
