ein schlechtes fazit für stewart-owner theseus, was sportingnews da zieht:

James Stewart - RB, Detroit Lions March 1, 10:13 a.m.
The Lions paid the $250,000 roster bonus to retain Stewart, but it's unlikely he'll get 1,000 yards in 2003. New head coach Steve Mariucci likes to use a comittee system at running back, so Stewart probably won't be getting as many carries. In addition to Luke Staley returning from injury, the Lions are expected to pick up another back in the draft. (Tom Kowalski/TSN)

eine gute prognose für MJ:

Isaac Bruce - WR, St. Louis Rams March 1, 10:09 a.m.
The production of Isaac Bruce may have been off a tad in 2002 (his average per catch of 13.6 was the lowest since his rookie season), but that doesn’t mean Bruce is slowing down. In fact, Bruce might have played last year as well as he had in any season. It’s just that he didn’t get as many balls thrown his way, especially long passes. Rams coaches are committed to throwing to Bruce more in 2003. Look for the Rams to move around Bruce more like he was in 2000 and 2001 in an attempt to free him up.

Are problems inevitable for the Keyshawn-Gruden relationship, or can it really work?
By Trent Modglin

Just how does Jon Gruden do it?

I’m not asking how he knew the tendencies of Rich Gannon in the Super Bowl or how he makes his face contort in all those weird ways. I’m not asking how he can stay awake in a dark office at 4 in the morning or how he knows just what route to have Joe Jurevicius run against a certain blitz. Just how he’s able to deal with Keyshawn Johnson is my question. And will it last?

Dominant personalities litter the NFL landscape. I know this. And I also know that it’s the coach’s job to learn to massage egos and keep everyone happy and the team winning. Gruden did it all last season. But for some reason I get the feeling he’s just sitting on a time bomb with Keyshawn. It will go off and damage things around it — relationships, camaraderie, focus. It’ll happen, I’m pretty sure of it. It’s a matter of time. Granted, it may happen after a couple more titles or when Keyshawn’s on his last legs, but it will happen.

The ticking may even be heard as early as this spring if Keyshawn doesn’t make it to the team’s workouts.

Two of the biggest personalities in the entire league call Tampa home. Three, actually, if you count Gruden. The other two, Warren Sapp and Keyshawn, get along well enough to coexist, but that’s about the limit of it. Sapp was critical of the fact Keyshawn was not present at some of the team’s voluntary workouts in the offseason. Keyshawn’s response: He’s always been a California guy with an offseason regimen in California.

“I don’t know if I’m going to change that at all,” Keyshawn said of his absence, “and I think the fact that (Gruden) knows I’m stubborn in that fashion, that he’s not going to push that button to try and make me do something that’s really not going to be conducive to our relationship.”

Keyshawn did add that he does “have some flexibility if he needs me to be there.”

Sapp said the only real rift he has had with Keyshawn dealt with the voluntary workouts that most every other member of the team was in town for. “I’m still going to be looking for him (this offseason),” Sapp said from a podium at the Super Bowl media day. “I’m still going to be pissed that he’s not there.”

Quiet. Listen. Can you hear the ticking?

Keyshawn’s abrasive, albeit always truthful and sometimes entertaining side came out during the week leading up to the Super Bowl.

In his diary on ESPN.com during Super Bowl week, he wrote: “He’s the most competitive coach I’ve ever had, but he always has to have the last word. You think I’m mouthy? I can’t even tell you how many times this year I’ve had to let him get his last little smart-ass comment and then I’ve just walked away.”

Yikes. That same week, in front of all the cameras and the lights he may never be able to completely leave behind, Keyshawn described his relationship with Gruden as “positive,” though some believed it to be slightly tenuous at the start.

“Now if I’m blind and I’m slapped in the face at the end of the day, then that’s my fault,” said Keyshawn, still failing to sound completely convinced everything was as placid as it seemed.

Yikes again. There’s that ticking noise. Not loud, but it’s there.

When the pair was caught on tape in a heated sideline spat early last season, speculation swirled. Both perfectionists, Gruden and Rich Gannon routinely butted heads over intricacies with the offense in Oakland, but they respected one another and realized they both were better off with the relationship intact. But Keyshawn isn’t Gannon. Nowhere near, in fact. When a guy pens an autobiography called “Just Give Me the Damn Ball!” as a precocious rookie, you feel natural in assuming a few snarls or verbal jabs in a Week Three blowout win over the Rams carry great potential to lead to something much larger down the road.

“Everybody gets along here,” Buccaneers FB Mike Alstott said when asked about the status of the coach-receiver bond. “Everybody has their own personalities, everybody’s a competitor, everybody wants to win, and when you have the talent we do and the high-energy, high-powered coaching staff we have, you’re not always going to agree on things. Great businesses always don’t, and this is the same situation.”

Keyshawn claims it took Bill Parcells several weeks for his former coach to figure out just what he was all about, how serious he was about the game and how best to communicate with him on and off the field. Not to mention how to mold themselves into something more than two headstrong forces that happened to be paid by the same people. Once a level of understanding and a level of respect blossomed, things smoothed considerably on the Jets’ sideline.

And as last season wore on, Keyshawn could begin to feel the same connection with Gruden that he felt with Parcells.

“I can go to him on the sideline now and suggest things and look up three plays later and it’s called,” Johnson said. “Before, I couldn’t feel that. I didn’t feel that when he first got there because he didn’t know what direction I was going in, and I didn’t know what direction he was going in.”

But soon enough, he did. They did. The drive of two people who put forth so much is bound to create friction, create sparks, create moments of hostility. But that isn’t always a bad thing, according to Keyshawn, who frequently bickered with Parcells, as dominant a presence as they come in the coaching ranks.

“I was joking the other day, and I said, ‘He doesn’t need any assistant coaches because he wants to coach every position,’ Johnson said of Gruden at the Super Bowl. “That’s the same thing with Parcells. He’s just hands-on, helping you with everything. He’s not getting in the way of his assistants; he just can’t help himself.”

In more than a few circles, Keyshawn is viewed as a me-first type of player. He talks of rings being his primary reason for playing and his blocking prowess and his respect for teammates, but permanently etched in more than a few people’s minds are visions of him ranting or pouting when the ball isn’t headed in his direction, a reputation that earned him the nickname “MeShawn.”

“I think there is a misconception about him a lot of times,” Bucs QB Brad Johnson said. “He’s actually one of the easiest guys to communicate with and talk with. He’s not over there, begging for the ball. He knows his touches are going to come.”

Johnson believes he and his talented, outspoken receiver get along so well because earlier in their careers, while he was a young quarterback in Minnesota playing with an older receiver in Cris Carter, Keyshawn was a young receiver in New York playing with an older quarterback in Vinny Testaverde. Their eyes and ears were wide open, all the time.

“I think that really kind of helped us come together pretty fast as far as our communication level and us being able to connect out on the field,” Johnson said.

Jay Gruden, Jon’s brother and a Bucs assistant, had a good view of the relationship between coach and star receiver last season.

“Keyshawn is just very outspoken and very competitive. And when you have that combination in a player and you’re not getting (the passes) you think you should be getting as a player, then of course it’s going to make the media,” Jay said. “And he’s just going to be dying to talk to anybody who listens.”

But Jay said his brother had been through all that during his time in coaching. He’s a pro at dealing with major egos, so he’s going to go about his business, calling the plays the way he wants them called, and if the players don’t like ’em, so be it.

“But I think Keyshawn understood that — that Jon was doing the best he could to get him involved in the offense — and I think they had a good working relationship at the end of the year,” Jay said. “Keyshawn probably wasn’t totally enthusiastic or happy with his production and numbers and all that good stuff, but I think he respected the way the offense progressed, and Keenan (McCardell) and Joe Jurevicius got involved, and that’s just football. Not everybody can catch 150 balls like Marvin Harrison, which Keyshawn would like, but I think he respected the goals of the football team more so than his personal statistics, which is the ultimate deal as far as team sports goes.”

True, it is. But winning always helps. Always. If the Bucs stagger a bit in the near future and their Lombardi Trophy begins to lose its luster, would it surprise anyone if Keyshawn makes ripples or, better yet, waves?

“I don’t showboat,” Keyshawn said. “I don’t even dance when I score touchdowns. I don’t create problems. I’m not a guy who uses drugs. You never catch me in the paper doing anything I shouldn’t be doing. (Buccaneers general manager) Rich McKay is no dummy. He knows I’m no cancer.”

I agree, Keyshawn. Cancer is too strong a word. But to think the marriage between him and Gruden is stable and set for years of bliss would be naïve. Especially when that ticking sound is there. You can hear it, can’t you?
Hallo
Na von mir aus können sie sich gerne trennen und Keyshawn geht zu einem Team was ohne Ende nur auf ihn wirft

Tom E. Curran reports for the Providence Journal the New England Patriots are not interested in free agent RB Olandis Gary (Broncos ), despite an earlier report stating they were.

Matt Maiocco reports for the Press Democrat restricted free agent QB Tim Rattay (49ers) is drawing some interest around the league, according to agent Jim Steiner.

The Denver Post reports the Denver Broncos almost signed free agent OT Flozell Adams (Dallas) before he re-signed with the Dallas Cowboys. They had a multimillion-dollar offer on the table for Adams and, for a brief time, it appeared Adams might accept it.

The Boston Globe reports the New England Patriots have interest in free agent FB Jerald Sowell (Jets) and FB Jon Ritchie (Raiders), if they don't sign free agent FB Richie Anderson (Jets). Ritchie might be out of the Patriots price range.

The Boston Globe reports Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells called free agent FB Richie Anderson (Jets) to have him visit with him and the Cowboys before he tried to sign with the New England Patriots. The word Saturday night was that Anderson will make that visit to Dallas Monday, but he was still leaning toward New England. Another factor is Dallas offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon. He, too, was with the Jets when Parcells coached them, and Carthon and Anderson are best friends. "It's a tough one for Richie," said his agent, Tony Agnone. "The money is the same with both teams, and it really came down to Richie just making a decision. Going someplace where he's familiar with the offense and the people is very important at this stage of his career. In this case, Richie was familiar and very much liked the coaches on both sides."

Jason Cole reports for the Miami Herald the Miami Dolphins may still be interested in a trade for New Orleans Saints LT Kyle Turley. Turley may be available for a second-round draft pick. Dolphins SVP Rick Spielman said "we haven't even discussed" the possibility of trading for Turley, but Spielman didn't rule out the idea.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Ken Dilger has restructured his contract.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Joe Jurevicius has restructured his contract.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press the Oakland Raiders will visit with free agent TE Hunter Goodwin (Vikings) this week. Vikings coach Mike Tice said the team values Goodwin, but he is No. 3 behind starters Jim Kleinsasser and Byron Chamberlain. "We have two tight ends in front of him,'' Tice said. "We love Hunter and he's a big part of what we do. But he's No. 3 here. If another team wants him as No. 2, he may have to make a decision."

Pete Dougherty reports for PackersNews.com agent Jimmy Sexton said the Green Bay Packers and his client, free agent DT Cletidus Hunt (Packers), have finalized a new contract. It is a six-year deal that will save the Packers about $3 million on their 2003 salary cap. The sides reached agreement on the financial terms of the deal late Thursday night, but spent much of Friday and part of Saturday working out the wording of the clauses regarding Hunt’s status in the NFL’s substance-abuse program. The Packers want to recoup bonus money if Hunt is suspended.

Gene Chamberlain reports for the Daily Southtown free agent QB Jake Delhomme (Saints) will visit the Chicago Bears in the coming week, according to Delhomme's agent, Mark Bartelstein.

The NY Daily News reports the New York Giants will visit with free agent P Sean Landeta (Eagles) this week.

The NY Daily News reports the New York Giants are not giving up on re-signing free agent WR Ike Hilliard (Giants). The Giants were expecting an initial contract proposal from Hilliard's agents over the weekend before they begin signing some of the unrestricted free agents they're bringing in for visits. "We're definitely talking," Hilliard's agent, Jonathan Feinsod, said. "We're having productive talks and both sides are trying to make it happen." It is believed Miami, Atlanta, New England and Washington all made overtures. Earlier reports had Miami and Washington as the leading candidates to sign Hilliard.

"But there are no guarantees. If somebody went crazy, then we have a chance to receive a first-round draft pick." As noted, the Atlanta Falcons are the first team to show an interest in Coles, but others are expected to follow.
