The Houston Chronicle reports the Houston Texans are not likely to sign free agent RB Emmitt Smith (Cowboys). Texans sources said it was doubtful the team would have any interest in Smith. It's not out of the question the Texans might consider Smith if there is no market for his services and he becomes willing to play for the veteran's minimum.

GM Marty Hurney didn't rule out the possibility. "Obviously, we expected he would be released and he's a player we've discussed," Hurney said. Leigh Steinberg, Stewart's agent, said Stewart wants to be a starter and views the Panthers as a good fit. "Carolina would be right at the top of our list," Steinberg said. "They are a team I'll be calling if I don't hear from them."

Chargers.com reports San Diego Chargers GM John Butler was asked Thursday why the team was against extending the contract of WR Curtis Conway. Butler replied, "I’ll tell you, we were going year by year by year with Curtis to see how things were going. He’s going into the last year of (his contract). Let’s just say that we offered him an excellent amount of money in my opinion for one year, which was ($1.9 million), with a chance to go to $3 million with incentives. Those incentives were for what his job is; catching the football. He could have been right up to $3 million again. At this stage of it, and sometimes at this stage of some people’s careers you have to make the judgment and decide to go one year at a time and judge it from there after that. I respect Curtis’ feelings very much."
